The University of Hull has announced that it will award honorary degrees this summer to: actress Judi Dench ; lawyer Lord Woolf of Barnes ; Richard Dawkins , professor of the public understanding of science at the University of Oxford; James Smith , founding editor of the Journal of Advanced Nursing; climate change authority Sir Crispin Tickell ; actor, director and producer Barrie Rutter ; actress Joan Plowright ; and rower Sir Steve Redgrave .

Anglia Polytechnic University will award honorary degrees to: Hermann Hauser , chairman of Advanced Telecommunications Modules Limited and a co-founder of Acorn Computers; and Terry Waite , former adviser to the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Robert Houston , professor of modern history at the University of St Andrews, has been elected a fellow of Academia Europae .

Tommy MacKay , president of the British Psychological Society, has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Glasgow .

Bournemouth University has awarded honorary degrees to: illustrator, artist and sculptor Alistair Michie ; and Anthony Minghella , award-winning director, producer and script-writer.

Hannah Steinberg , visiting professor at Middlesex University and professor emeritus in psychopharmacology at University College London, has been awarded the British Association for Psychopharmacology/AstraZeneca Lifetime Achievement Award for 2001 .
