Mary Quant, fashion designer, is to receive an honorary degree from Winchester School of Art today.

Sir Stirling Moss has been awarded an honorary doctorate of technology from the University of Sunderland. Also awarded honours were: Terry Deary, children's author; Anne Wright, former vice-chancellor of the University of Sunderland; Edward Wilson, director of the National Youth Theatre; Alan Richardson, executive director of Scottish Power in the US; Gregory Hutchings, executive chairman of Tomkins plc; and Charles Rees, visiting chemistry professor.

Golfers Seve Ballesteros and Colin Montgomerie will receive honorary doctor of laws degrees from the University of St Andrews.

Glasgow University has awarded honorary degrees to: the Very Revd John Hedley McIndoe, former moderator of the general assembly of the Church of Scotland; Lord Penrose, senator of the College of Justice in Scotland; Graca Machel, former president of Unesco; Donald Emslie Robertson Watt, professor of medieval history at the University of St Andrews; Sir John Bertrand Gurdon, chairman of the Wellcome Cancer Research Campaign Institute; Thomas Fulton Wilson McKillop, chief executive of AstraZeneca plc; Alexander Grant, managing director of Norfrost; Robert Gemmill, member of the university court; Sir Matthew Dean Goodwin, former chairman of Hewden Stuart; Philip Lader, American ambassador; Daphne Sheldrick, wildlife campaigner.

The Robert Gordon University has awarded honorary doctor of laws degrees to: the Rt Hon Lord Mackay of Clashfern, former Lord Chancellor; and Peter Nicol MBE, ranked number one in the world squash rankings. Ian McKenzie Smith, president of the Royal Scottish Academy, has been awarded an honorary doctor of arts degree.
