Coventry University will award honorary degrees this autumn to broadcaster Stuart Linnell (MA), Beverley Nielson, regional director of the CBI (MA); Richard Parham, former managing director of Peugeot (DBA) and Roger Pringle, director of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Stratford-on-Avon (MA).

Geoff Sykes, professor of inorganic chemistry at the University of Newcastle, has been elected a fellow of the Royal Society.

Alan Williams, head of the department of fuel and energy

at the University of Leeds, has been awarded a fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Brian Shefton, professor emeritus of Greek art and archaeology at the University of Newcastle and founder of the university's Shefton Museum of Greek art and archaeology, has received the British Academy's Kenyon Medal. He received the medal at a conference on Greek contact with the western Mediterranean, held to mark his 80th birthday.
