Ronald Barnett, dean of professional development at the Institute of Education, University of London, has been awarded a DLitt (Ed) by the University of London in recognition of his contribution to the study of higher education.

Michael Healy, visiting professorial fellow at the institute, has been awarded a gold medal from the Royal Statistical Society. The medal is awarded to an outstanding statistician once every three years.

The University of St Andrews will award honorary degrees to: Neal Ascherson, journalist and academic (LLD); Jocelyn Bell Burnell, professor of physics and chair of the department of physics at the Open University (DSc); Helene Cixous, author and holder of the chair in English Literature at the University of Paris VIII (DLitt); Alexander Edward Fleming, principal financial economist at the World Bank (LLD); John Humphrys, presenter of Radio 4's Today programme (LLD); Benoit Mandelbrot, mathematician (DSc); Ann Matheson, developer of Scottish library services (DLitt); Linda Ormiston, mezzo-soprano (DMus); Pekka Puska, professor of chronic diseases at the National Institute of Public Health, Helsinki and director of the North Karelia Project, which aims to cut heart disease in Finland (DSc); Paula Rego, artist (DLitt); John Rose, chief executive of Rolls-Royce (DSc); Peter Shaffer, playwright (DLitt); Sir John Shaw, deputy governor of the Bank of Scotland and former chair of the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council (LLD).

Nigel Whiteley, professor of art at Lancaster University, has been awarded a Getty Fellowship to study the works of Reyner Banham, architecture, design and art theorist and critic, at the Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

The University of Wales has awarded honorary degrees to: John Charles, former footballer (MA); Lilian Mary Jones, former headteacher (MA); Chris Hallam, paraplegic athlete (MSc); Meuric Rees, Lord Lieutenant of Gwynedd and chairman of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society (MSc); Gareth Crompton, professor of public health medicine at the University of Wales College of Medicine (MD); Peter Davies, former honorary treasurer of the University of Wales (LLD); James Arthur Davies, former principal of Bangor Normal College (LLD); Judith Evans, director of human resources at Homebase and a director of the board of the Quality Assurance Agency (LLD); Glyn Phillips, former executive principal of the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (LLD); Sir Peter Williams, chairman of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (DSc); Gwynn Williams, vice-president of the University of Wales, Bangor (DLitt); Hans Kung, theologian (DD).
