Female Scots principal

Joan Stringer, principal of Edinburgh's Queen Margaret University College, will become Scotland's first female university principal in January when she succeeds John Mavor at Napier University.

Professor Stringer, vice-convener of Universities Scotland, served for six years as a commissioner with the Equal Opportunities Commission. She graduated in history and politics from Keele University, and her PhD examined the effectiveness of Britain's industrial training policy.
