Ann Moss, professor of French at the University of Durham, has been elected a fellow.

Royal Academy of Engineering

Michael Kelly, head of the school of electronic engineering, information and mathematics at the University of Surrey, has been elected a fellow.

London Business School

Honorary fellows: Carol Galley, Merrill Lynch Mercury Asset Management; David Potter, Psion plc.

Fellowships: Peter Schou, Lan and Spar; Chris Apgyris, Harvard Business School.

Royal Society

Howard Florey fellowships have been awarded to: Elizabeth Hartland, department of biochemistry, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine; Bryone Kuss, Institute of Child Health, University of London; Sally Poulsen, biological chemistry, Cambridge Centre for Molecular Recognition; Fiona Stennard, developmental biology, Wellcome Cancer Research Institute, Cambridge.

Bolton Institute

Honorary fellow: Shirley Anne Field, actress and film star.

Fellowships: Harold Kroto, professor at the University of Sussex and Nobel Prize-winner; Leslie Grant, former editor, Bolton Evening News; Jack Goldberg, former pro-chancellor of the University of Salford and a governor of the institute.

John Moores University, Liverpool

Honorary fellow: Joan Armatrading, singer and patron of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts; Kamlesh Bahl, chairwoman of the Equal Opportunities Commission; Sue Ryder, baroness, founder of the Sue Ryder Foundation; Paul McCartney, life peer, singer and supporter of LIPA; Jonathon Porritt, programme director of Forum for the Future; Lewis Biggs, director of the Tate Gallery in Liverpool; John Harvey-Jones, life peer and former chair of ICI.
