* Stephen Bowen , director of campaigns at Amnesty International, will combine his role in the organisation with a senior lectureship at Kingston University from September.

* The Royal Northern College of Music has appointed Linda Merrick , head of professional performance studies, to the new post of deputy vice-principal. It has also named Anthony Gritten , head of the School of Music at the University of East Anglia, head of postgraduate studies and research. He will succeed Ronald Woodley , who has been appointed professor of music in the research department at the Birmingham Conservatoire.

* Philip Creamer , director of the research and development service at Portsmouth University, has been appointed pro vice-chancellor of Anglia Polytechnic University. The university has also appointed Charlotte Rayner , former reader in organisation studies at Staffordshire University's Business School and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, professor of human research management in its Business School.

* Stephen Baron , professor and member of the Applied Educational Research Scheme for Scotland (funded by the Scottish Executive Education Department and the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council) and member of the director's team of the UK's Economic and Social Research Council's teaching and learning research programme, has been appointed to a chair in Strathclyde University's faculty of education. The university has also appointed Brian Boyd to a professorship in the department of language education.
