George Fraser has been appointed director of the University of Leicester's Space Research Centre, taking over from Alan Wells, who will continue as emeritus professor on the Beagle 2 and Swift projects.

Swansea Institute has appointed three new assistant deans: head of the business school, Jim Waygood ; head of the school of humanities, Nick Potter ; and foundation art and design course director, Stephen White .

Clare Mackie , professor of pharmaceutical care and head of the Centre for Partnerships in Medicines and Health at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, and director of the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Pharmaceutical Care and Curriculum Development, has been appointed to the Pfizer chair of pharmacy and head of the Medway School of Pharmacy, which is part of a new joint campus for the universities of Greenwich and Kent.

Clive Colledge , lecturer in graphic design at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, has been elected chair of the Direct Marketing Association's educational charity for young creatives (the Graeme Robertson Trust).

The University of Bradford has appointed Frank Leusen its first senior scientist at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation. A principal research fellow at Bradford, he worked for Novartis in Switzerland before joining Accelrys in Cambridge in 1993.

Graham Teasdale , professor and head of the department of neurosurgery at the University of Glasgow, chairman of the School of Neuroscience and associate dean for medical research, has been elected president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (2003-06).
