• Sir Brandon Gough, chair of banknote manufacturer De La Rue, has been named chancellor of the University of East Anglia. Sir Brandon chaired the Higher Education Funding Council for England from 1993, overseeing the transformation of polytechnics into universities.

• Martin White, professor of theatre at the University of Bristol, has been appointed provost of the university's Institute for Advanced Studies. He will succeed Bernard Silverman.

• Tony Bush - professor of international and comparative education at the University of Reading and editor of Educational Management and Administration - will join the International Institute for Education Leadership at Lincoln University.

• Roy Greenslade, former editor of the Daily Mirror and managing editor of The Sunday Times, has been appointed professor of journalism at City University, London; Tony Mullee, former chief executive officer of Guernsey Telecom, has been named director of City's new department of marketing and business development.

• Randal Richards - professor and head of the department of chemistry at the University of Durham and director of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Polymer Science and Technology - is the new as director of research and innovation at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, succeeding David Clark.

• Brian Follett - former vice-chancellor of Warwick University (1993-2001), current chair of the Arts and Humanities Research Board and professor of zoology at Oxford University - has been named chair of the Teacher Training Agency.
