The following were elected as honorary fellows of the school on December 12, 1996: John Ashworth, chairman of the British Library board and former director of the school; Peter Bauer, life peer, LSE professor emeritus of economics and fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge; Charles Lee, lawyer, chair of the council of the stock exchange of Hong Kong Ltd (1992-94), chair of LSE's Hong Kong committee; Eric Roll, life peer, president of S G Warburg plc and former member of the school's court; Vivien Stern, former director of the National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders, member of the advisory councils of Cambridge Institute of Criminology, Policy Studies Institute, board of Geneva-based Association for Prevention of Torture and board of Washington-based Eisenhower Foundation; Edward Anthony Wrigley, professor of economic history and master of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, chairman of the Population Investigation Committee (1984-90).

Deborah Cooper, director of Skill (National Bureau for Students with disabilities) was presented with an honorary fellowship on December 4.
The Leverhulme Trust has awarded research fellowships to: John Guy, professor of modern history, vice principal and provost; Jill Harris, senior lecturer in ancient history; Andrew Whiten, reader in psychology.
University of Edinburgh Honorary fellowship: Winifred Logan Gordon, former member of the department of nursing studies; Sydney Park Robertson, brigadier with the 51st Highland Division of the Royal Artillery, deputy lord lieutenant for Orkney (1968) currently vice lord lieutenant, founder of the Robertson Ness Trust; David Ross Stewart, former managing director of John Bartholomew and Sons Ltd, director of Quayle Munro Holdings plc and Lothian Investment Fund and chairman of St Andrew Trust plc.
