UNIVERSITY OF SURREY. The following have been appointed to readerships: Dr M. Tipton, who will continue as head of the human and applied physiology section of the Robens Institute; Dr R. Carter, former reader in pathology and consultant histopathologist, Institute of Cancer Research at the Royal Marsden Hospital; Dr H. Farzin, independent consultant, World Bank, Washington.

UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW Dugald Mackie, secretary to the council and director of finance and central services at the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council, has been appointed secretary of the university court.

UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER Ann Tate, director of educational development, has been appointed provost of the university's Jordanstown campus and pro-vice-chancellor (external affairs); Fabian Monds, pro-vice-chancellor (planning and research) has been appointed provost at the Magee College campus in Londonderry.

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH Ian Dalton, currently deputy chairman of the United Kingdom Science Park Association, has been appointed managing director of the Edinburgh Technopole Company Ltd, responsible for managing the university's technology transfer project.

UNIVERSITY OF LUTON The university has appointed its first pro vice chancellor, Kate Montgomery Robinson, dean of the faculty of health care and social studies.

LEONARDO The European Commission has appointed Jonathan Winterton, of the University of Bradford's management centre, as a member of the expert team to the Leonardo training programme. He was nominated by the Trades Union Congress and the European Trade Union Confederation.

NORTHERN IRELAND AFFAIRS SELECT COMMITTEE Dale Singleton, a senior lecturer in the department of environmental planning at Queen's University, Belfast, has been appointed specialist adviser to the House of Commons' Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee.
