About Xi‘an Jiaotong-Liverpool University

Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University was established in May 2006 as an international joint venture university. It was founded by Xi’an Jiaotong University in China and the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. It is the only one of its kind approved by the Ministry of Education in China.

The university is located in Suzhou, a city in the Jiangsu Province of East China. Since ancient times, Suzhou has been referred to in China as "paradise on earth", owing to its beautiful gardens. The Humble Administrator’s Garden, Lingering Garden, and the Classical Gardens of Suzhou are all designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Today Suzhou is one of the most developed cities in China and is home to the Suzhou Industrial Park, the Chinese version of Silicon Valley.

The university offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the fields of engineering, business, finance, science, urban planning, architecture, culture, and language. Undergraduate students earn an XJTLU degree from the Chinese Ministry of Education and a degree from the University of Liverpool that is globally recognised. Postgraduate students receive a degree from the University of Liverpool that is approved by the Ministry of Education.

Throughout the year the university carries out innovative research projects. Its international environment attracts leading researchers from around the world, bringing new knowledge and global ideas. The university is home to a number of research institutes including the Institute for Sustainable Materials and Environment, Operations and Supply Chain Excellence Institute, and the Research Institute of Quantitative Finance. It also has the Urban and Environmental Studies University Research Centre, as well as several laboratories.
