Founded in 1956, the University of South Florida (USF) is a major public research university.

The Tampa campus is considered the main campus of the university and serves more than 41,000 students and houses 14 colleges and is the doctoral granting campus of the USF System.

The Tampa Campus is home to USF Health, which comprises the colleges of medicine, nursing, public health and pharmacy. Its journalism and media studies programme is also taught on the Tampa campus.

There are many facilities and amenities on the Tampa campus for students such as a bookstore, post office, print centre and a fitness centre with group fitness classes, aquatics, intramural sports, club sports, outdoor recreation opportunities, and adventure trips.

There are two libraries located on the Tampa campus: the Tampa Campus Research Library and the Shimberg Health Sciences Library. The Research Library is the largest University of South Florida library while the Shimberg Health Sciences Library is located on the Tampa campus and serves USF Health students and faculty.

The USF Tampa Campus is also a tobacco and smoke-free campus as of 4 January 2016.
