The Technische Universität Kaiserslautern has a research profile in the natural and engineering sciences, integrating aspects of planning, social sciences, and economics. The university is located on a modern research campus, on which several other advanced research institutes have joined over the last decade, such as the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITWM), the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (IESE), the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI and the Institute for Composite Materials (IVW).

The Technische Universität Kaiserslautern consists of twelve departments (Architecture; Regional and Environmental Planning; Civil Engineering; Biology; Chemistry; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Computer Science; Mechanical and Process Engineering; Mathematics; Physics; Social Sciences; Business Studies and Economics) and is currently offering 110 study programs. The university has currently 14,648 students enrolled; it has 2,344 employees and 206 professors and junior professors. The strategy of internationalization implies that local professional competences are complemented by existing strategic partnerships with universities and research institutes all around the world.
Research at TUK
In 2008 the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern implemented the Research Initiative jointly with the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. Two State Research Centers, six State Research Units and three research areas with high potential have been established as an instrument to further develop research in priority fields. Additionally, within these research networks special emphasis is put on generating optimal conditions for early career researchers. The aim is to foster interaction by specific activities, e.g. summer schools, and to further develop mentoring for career development.
The science location Kaiserslautern is characterized by manifold interaction of academia and industry integrating innovative concepts of graduate education: The Fraunhofer Innovation Centre "Applied System Modeling for Computational Engineering" and the "High Performance Center for Simulation and Software-based Innovation", jointly initiated by the Fraunhofer Research Institutes ITWM and IESE and the University of Kaiserslautern, represent impressive examples of transferring fundamental research to industrial applications. The Technische Universität Kaiserslautern has a strong focus on excellent graduate education: several international and national research training groups funded by the German Science Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG), including participation in the federal graduate school of excellence MAINZ. Several of the graduate programs are integrated in collaborative Research Centers, the most prestigious type of research programs available in Germany.
Moreover, the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern has well established university-wide service structures to support excellent graduate education: the Young Researchers Network provides PhD students and postdocs through to junior group leaders and junior professors with trainings for science-related skills and non-scientific qualifications as well as mobility funding and start-up funds for independent research. The International School for Graduate Studies (ISGS) is internationally promotes Master's programs and PhD studies and serves as a one-stop office for international graduate and doctoral students. The ISGS provides a broad range of services, such as international marketing and recruiting, application and admission, soft skills program, accommodation, social tutoring, language and integration program, cultural programs, support in administrative and organizational issues, information and counselling.
Finally, the Distance and Independent Studies Center (DISC) of the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern represents one of the largest providers of graduate distance education in Germany.
