Established in 1986, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) was founded with the purpose of contributing to the nation and humanity by conducting in-depth research on the profound theories and a wide range of applications essential to advancing Korea and the world. It strives to train a select pool of talented students to become future global leaders with both knowledge and honorable character through high-quality education. On the research front, POSTECH translates research outcomes into real-world applications via close collaborations with industry, academia, and research institutions.

Since its founding, POSTECH has maintained its identity as a small elite university with only 320 incoming freshmen each year. The small number of students has enabled POSTECH to nimbly respond to the changing times and implement innovative policies.

POSTECH specializes in 11 science and engineering departments. Undergraduates do not pick their major until the end of the third semester. Incoming freshmen are free to explore different areas of study during their first two semesters, while following a core curriculum of courses including mathematics, general physics, humanities, and social studies. POSTECH also requires all new students to take introductory AI courses.

Graduate programs at POSTECH support students to become future leaders, allowing them to engage in challenging research and industry collaborations. Global companies such as POSCO, LG Display, Samsung Electronics, Google and Apple have partnered with POSTECH.

POSTECH aspires to become a global leader in select research areas such as ICT/AI, biotech and healthcare, energy and materials, smart city, and basic science. Complemented by excellent research institutes and infrastructures that are second-to-none in Asia including the Max Plank Korea/POSTECH, the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics, the Graduate Institute of Ferrous & Energy Materials Technology, and the Institute of Membrane Proteins, POSTECH seeks new breakthroughs in basic and applied research that can propel our world forward.

POSTECH conducts bold and creative research in basic science and our synchrotron radiation accelerators are an enormous asset. In fact, POSTECH and Stanford University are the only two universities in the world to operate such research facilities on their own. POSTECH houses the 3rd generation radiation accelerator (the 5th of its kind in the world) and the 4th generation accelerator, only the 3rd of its kind in the world.
