The Department of Food Science and Nutrition is a multi-disciplinary department established from 1 January 2023 under the Faculty of Science. With the unique standing in Hong Kong and the commitment to quality teaching, research excellence and knowledge transfer, the Department is envisioned to develop all-rounded graduates with professional qualifications, and promote interdisciplinary research with positive societal impacts. The Department’s key research pillars are Food Safety, Food Technology, Human Nutrition and Chinese Medicine. To boost the leadership and impact of PolyU’s research work in areas of significant societal needs and strategic importance, the Strategic Hiring Scheme is introduced to recruit faculty members at all levels and outstanding scholars are invited to join the University under the Strategic Hiring Scheme. Appointees recruited under the Strategic Hiring Scheme should have conducted / led world-leading research that is commensurate with the stage of their academic career. Apart from making a significant contribution to most of other academic programmes of the University by providing service teaching, the Department also offers master programmes in Applied Mathematics for Science and Technology, Operational Research and Risk Analysis and Quantitative Finance and FinTech. Starting from 2025/26 academic year, the Department offers a new Bachelor Scheme in Applied Mathematics and Finance Analytics and Fast-track Integrated Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes and will launch a new master programme, MSc in Mathematics for Artificial Intelligence Technology in 2026/27. Members of the Department have expertise in applied optimization and optimal control, engineering computation, operational research, management science and applied statistics, FinTech, data science and machine learning.
