The Position The Research Environment Specialist plays a key role in developing, maintaining, and supporting high-quality research environments that enable advanced computation, data analysis, and AI/ML workflows at the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI). The role supports major scientific domains—including climate and weather, geosciences, national water management, bioinformatics, and astronomy—by ensuring researchers can effectively utilise NCI’s HPC, cloud, data, and GPU platforms. Working under the broad direction of the Software and Data Modernisation Manager, the Specialist is responsible for deploying and optimising scientific software stacks, integrating tools and services into NCI’s computational ecosystem, and supporting users with expert advice on HPC, data science, and AI/ML workflows. The position also leads the development of documentation, training materials, and community engagement activities to ensure users can access, understand, and leverage NCI’s capabilities. The role requires strong technical expertise in scientific computing, HPC environments, Linux-based workflows, and modern AI/ML technologies. It also demands excellent communication skills, a proactive service mindset, and the ability to collaborate across teams and with external stakeholders. The Specialist is expected to stay current with emerging technologies, contribute to performance optimisation and software modernisation efforts, and uphold ANU’s standards for safety, equity, and professional conduct. The Person The ideal candidate holds postgraduate qualifications or equivalent experience in HPC, data science and AI/ML, with strong domain expertise in areas such as climate, weather, environmental science or related fields. They demonstrate proven capability in developing, optimising and deploying scientific workflows across HPC, cloud and GPU environments, with proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Fortran, C, R or Julia and experience with modern AI/ML frameworks. They have expertise in data formats, software engineering practices, performance profiling and benchmarking, and are confident working within Linux environments and distributed systems. The successful candidate is collaborative, proactive and service-oriented, with excellent communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with researchers and stakeholders. Classification: Academic Level B Salary package: $121,598 - $137,870 per annum plus 17% superannuation Terms: Full Time, Fixed term (up to 24 months) Position Description and Selection Criteria: Research Fellow Work with world leading researcher in computer vision and machine learning Contribute to impactful research on real-world problems in 3D shape design Collaborate with international researchers at ANU, Australia and EPFL, Switzerland About the opportunity The Research Fellow will contribute to the ARC Discover Project, "Differentiable Optimisation for Constrained Three-dimensional Shape Design." The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof Stephen Gould and Dr Dylan Campbell to develop novel techniques for designing constrained 3D shapes, such as airfoils, using a framework of differentiable optimisation. The project involved collaboration with researchers at EPFL, Switzerland and may involve travel to meet with the research team there. It is expected that research leads to high impact outcomes including publications in top-tier venues and open-source software. Successful candidates will also work along side PhD students working on related problems in computer vision and machine learning, and contribute to their development. A strong background in numerical optimisation, deep learning and computer vision is required. The Opportunity We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow in International Relations to work on the ARC project “Humane Exclusion: How States Justify Excluding Refugees.” The project examines the long history of humane-sounding arguments that Western states and other actors have used to justify controlling the mobility of Indigenous people, enslaved people, minorities, displaced people, and marginalized others. It pays particular attention to how these arguments have often relied on appeals to certain understandings of theology, race, gender, climate, and disease. Reporting to Professor Luke Glanville, the successful candidate will undertake original research on one or more of the project’s themes. The successful candidate will be expected to produce high-quality scholarly publications, contribute to project workshops, assist Professor Glanville in the management of the research project, and contribute to teaching in the Department of International Relations.
