Vietnam's first systematic Phase I trial of CD19-directed CAR T cell therapy enrolled 16 patients with relapsed or refractory B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Cells were manufactured on-site at VinUniversity's Vinmec Research Institute of Stem Cell and Gene Technology, using a closed, semi-automated platform that bypasses the logistical and financial barriers placing this therapy beyond reach in middle-income settings. All ALL patients achieved complete remission by Day 30; NHL patients maintained an 87.5% remission rate at six months. Toxicity was manageable, with only one Grade 3 cytokine release syndrome event across the cohort. Conducted in collaboration with the National Institute of Hematology and UCSF, these results demonstrate that point-of-care manufacturing can deliver outcomes comparable to globally approved products—offering a scalable model for expanding access across Southeast Asia.
