JOB DESCRIPTION

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:


	A Ph.D. (obtained or soon to be obtained) in Automation, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
	Solid theoretical foundation and outstanding research capabilities, with first-author publications in high-level international journals in related fields.
	Good teaching potential and communication skills, capable of teaching in English.
	Team spirit and ability to conduct research independently.


Preferred Qualifications:


	Experience with industrial field projects or familiarity with mainstream industrial software/systems (e.g., DCS, MES, APC).
	In-depth research in areas such as Reinforcement Learning, Large Language Models, Digital Twins, Predictive Maintenance.

The Department of Nutritional Sciences in the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Vienna is looking for a Senior Lecturer (m/f/d) in the field of biochemistry with a focus on nutritional sciences.

The position is located at the Department of Nutritional Sciences, which is part of the Faculty of Life Sciences. As a Senior Lecturer, you will primarily teach on the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in the field of nutritional sciences, with a focus on biochemistry, and contribute to the further development of scientifically based, research-driven teaching.
Our focus is on student-oriented, skills-based and research-driven teaching that links scientific findings with current societal challenges in the field of nutrition and health.

The 20-hour-per-week position involves a teaching load of approximately 3 semester hours per week of academic teaching and approximately 8 semester hours per week of instructive teaching.

Your future tasks:


	Planning, performing and further developing of courses in nutritional sciences with a focus on biochemistry (lectures, practical courses, seminars) at Bachelor’s and Master’s level
	Designing, organizing and supervising of laboratory practical courses, including instructing students in experimental techniques
	Ensuring laboratory and occupational safety (SOPs, safety briefings, quality standards, management of equipment and chemicals)
	Developing of innovative teaching and assessment formats (e.g. blended learning, e-learning, competence-based assessment)
	Contributing to the development of new (digitally aided) teaching concepts and to module coordination
	Providing subject-specific guidance to tutors and practical instructors
	Collaborating with teaching and research teams; carrying out administrative tasks related to teaching operations


What we expect:

	A relevant university degree at master’s level or higher, including a PhD (e.g. nutritional sciences, biochemistry, molecular biology, food chemistry or a related discipline)

About the Role

The Lecturer I in Surveying in the Surveying Section is a key academic position responsible for the practical delivery of foundational surveying skills to undergraduate students enrolled in the Bachelor of Surveying and Bachelor of Geographical Information Science programs. The role requires a Master’s degree in surveying or a related discipline and recent professional experience in land surveying. 

The lecturer will be the coordinator of subjects delivered by the surveying section and will be expected to develop and deliver: lecture materials, practicals, assessments and examinations. The lecturer will also be expected to coordinate student field work and supervise student final year projects. A strong emphasis is placed on mentoring students and supervision of fieldwork activities.

Primary Responsibilities


	Course delivery, supervision and mentoring

	
		Develop, deliver and examine subjects offered by the Surveying Section
		Run field work activities during the annual field camp
		Supervise student final year projects and provide mentoring for students

Qualification & Experience


	Citizenship: Be a PNG, PICT or Commonwealth citizen.
	Education: Bachelor’s degree in Surveying (preferably from PNGUoT) or international equivalent. Master’s degree (by coursework or research) in Surveying or closely related discipline. 
	Professional Experience: Minimum of 5 years full-time equivalent professional experience with GNSS, cadastral, engineering, or topographic surveys.
	Licensing:
	
		Registered Surveyor (PNG, PICT or Commonwealth jurisdiction) is preferred.
	
	


Key Competencies:


	High level written and spoken competency in English
	Demonstrate proficiency with total stations, levels, and theodolites.
	Demonstrate proficiency with GNSS surveying, laser scanning and UAVs (desirable but not essential).
	Ability and willingness to teach, mentor, and supervise students in practical settings.
	Strong sense of responsibility, time management, and interpersonal skills.
	Commitment to safety protocols and professional field standards.


Desirable Attributes:


	Familiarity with Surveying software, GNSS software, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or GIS software.
	Previous experience in a teaching or training capacity.
	Willingness to work flexible hours during extended fieldwork exercises.
	Open to pursuing PhD study on a part-time basis, if desired.

We are looking for a motivated and talented individual to join the group as a postdoctoral researcher (maternity leave substitute).

The position offers an excellent opportunity to participate in leading the research field together with national and international collaborators as a member of a highly skilled team. The research project is related to 2D materials and their study using advanced correlative microscopy methods (scanning transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy) and high energy-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy.

Key responsibilities:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration. Specifically:


	You are involved in research related to atomic-scale structural manipulation of low-dimensional materials using electron and ion irradiation combining experimental materials physics, atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy, and in publishing the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
	You will support doctoral students and other group members in their research involving experiments, data analysis and preparation of results for publication.
	You engage in teaching (independently and/or in a team), including co-teaching a course about Python, within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
	You may occasionally be involved in the organization of meetings, conferences and symposiums.
	You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.


Your qualifications:


	Completed doctoral degree in physics or a related field.
	Hands-on experience with atomic-resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, atomic-force microscopy, and related methods, demonstrated through academic thesis or publications.
	Experience in Python programming is required, teaching experience in Python programming is an advantage.
	Experience in teaching research-based laboratory courses is an advantage.
	Experience in mentoring bachelor and master's students during their thesis work is an advantage.
	Excellent command of written and spoken English (C1 Level or equivalent).
	Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
	Good communication skills and ability to present research findings effectively.
