Thirty new professors will be appointed in the faculty of medicine at Imperial College London over the next three years. The drive forms a key part of the research strategy for the newly formed Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, the UK's first Academic Health Science Centre. The NHS trust is the UK's largest; it was created last year by merging St Mary's and Hammersmith Hospitals NHS trusts and integrating these with Imperial College. The first wave of chairs will be in cardiovascular sciences and renal medicine; diabetes and obesity; musculoskeletal disorders; genetics and genomics; and experimental medicine. Imperial's faculty of medicine is one of largest in Europe, with more than £108 million in research funding.
