Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is an international joint venture university founded by Xi’an Jiaotong University (China) and the University of Liverpool (UK) in 2006.

The University currently offers approximately 51 bachelor's, 55 master's, and 17 doctoral programmes in the fields of in the fields of science, engineering, business, finance, architecture, urban planning, language, culture, and all are taught in English except for general and basic courses.

Undergraduate students earn two degrees: an XJTLU degree from the Chinese Ministry of Education and a globally recognised degree from the University of Liverpool. Postgraduate students receive a University of Liverpool degree that is recognised by the Ministry of Education.

XJTLU is located in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), Suzhou. It’s one of the most developed cities in China. Suzhou Industrial Park, China’s equivalent of Silicon Valley and a hub of global innovation, houses a large cluster of Fortune 500 companies, transnational enterprises, and R&D centres, not only providing favourable conditions for XJTLU’s ongoing development but also numerous internship and job opportunities for XJTLU students.

Offering a unique international education experience, XJTLU brings together excellent research practice and expertise from both institutions and gives students the skills and knowledge they need to secure careers in a global marketplace. XJTLU now has over 25,000 enrolled students in both Suzhou and Liverpool in the UK, with plans to grow to about 28,000 students by 2025. There are currently about 2,000 staff, among which about 1,000 academic staff, with an almost even split between citizens of the People’s Republic of China and international passport holders. XJTLU offers our undergraduates and postgraduates over 100 programmes with a diverse spectrum of courses. XJTLU is entering a new and exciting phase of its development as part of its strategic priorities for the next ten years. Adopting a new higher education model based on the concept of Syntegrative Education (SE), XJTLU is currently opening a new Entrepreneurial Education site in Taicang, part of wider Suzhou, where the Entrepreneur College (Taicang) is located. ABOUT SCHOOL OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY The School of Advanced Technology has five departments (intelligent Science, Computing, Mechatronics and Robotics, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Communications and networking). As a research and practice-led school our faculty and staff are committed to providing our students with a challenging and stimulating environment, as well as unlocking their full potential. Upon graduation, students will become highly-sought-after candidates with strong academic knowledge as well as extensive transferable skills in communication, team-work and project management. Areas of expertise in Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering: Energy and Electrical Power, Semiconductor integrated circuit manufacture/design (analogue, digital, RF, mixed signal) RESPONSIBILITIES Applicants should have extensive teaching experience, have published high quality papers in their area of expertise, have been successful in obtaining research grants, and have substantial experience in the supervision of research students. The successful candidate, in addition to teaching typically two modules/courses per year (i.e. one per semester), will provide leadership in curriculum development and enhancing our research profile at the international level. They are expected to assume administrative responsibilities based on their experience. We are committed to creating a centre of research excellence in the humanities and social sciences that is recognised within China and internationally. The School also aims to develop outreach and partnerships with domestic and international universities. The School of HSS researches and educates across different disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. The School, supported by over 90 academic staff from more than 17 countries, comprises five academic departments: the Department of Applied Linguistics, the Department of China Studies, the Department of International Studies, the Department of Media and Communication, and the Department of Literary and Translation Studies. This role reports directly to the University Vice President of Academic Affairs and serves as the chief academic and administrative leader of the School of HSS. The appointee is expected to provide energetic leadership and strategic direction in reshaping HSS education and research of the School, aligning with the University’s vision to become a leading reformer of HSS education in China and globally; in guiding the School in its diverse activities including undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum developments, research directions, academic partnerships, and industry linkages; and further advancing its global stature. Proven Research and Teaching Excellence: A strong record of scholarly research, evidenced by publications in top-tier, peer-reviewed international journals and prestigious presses in humanities and social sciences-related disciplines. A track record of effective teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, preferably in an international context. Academic Leadership Experience: Significant experience in academic administration, such as serving as a School Dean, associate Dean and department chair, or in similar leadership roles where they were responsible for overseeing staff, managing budgets, and developing academic programmes. Experience with staff development, curriculum design, research leadership, internationalisation and strategic planning. Global Perspective and International Experience: Experiences of working in international academic institutions. Familiarity with global higher education and cross-cultural management, as well as an understanding of how to adapt humanities and social sciences education to diverse cultural and economic contexts. ABOUT the School of Humanities and Social Sciences The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) is dedicated to establishing a centre of research excellence that is recognised both within China and internationally. To this end, we offer innovative degree programmes that position graduates for success both in pursuit of employment at leading companies and admission into postgraduate programmes at the world’s best universities. The School also cultivates outreach and partnerships with domestic and international universities, as well as with industry and policy stakeholders. The teaching responsibilities of the colleague will consist of two parts: 1) to lead and develop School-level AI modules and 2) contribute partially to department-level teaching. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate must possess a PhD in computer science or a relevant field within the humanities and social sciences as per the respective descriptions below. Humanities We seek candidates who understand the intersection of AI and the humanities and are capable of integrating AI technologies into their research and teaching, primarily through natural language processing (NLP) to analyse historical texts, literature, and cultural data. Experience with AI tools such as machine learning for sentiment analysis, data mining for social trends, or computational linguistics for linguistic analysis will be highly regarded. Additionally, the ability to instruct students on how AI can be applied to the study of philosophy, ethics, and history is essential. Understanding AI’s implications for privacy, identity, and digital culture is also critical. Social Sciences We seek candidates who can incorporate AI into their research on human behaviour, social trends, and policy analysis and are knowledgeable about AI tools that can analyse large datasets, including predictive modelling, sentiment analysis, or social network analysis. Experience with AI applications in sociology, political science, communication, linguistics, or area studies is vital. The candidate should be equipped to examine AI’s impact on social structures, inequality, and ethics in their work and understand AI’s potential to shape societal norms and public policy. Familiarity with tools such as Python for data analysis and AI-driven surveys or data collection methods is advantageous.
