Northampton. Chris Moore, the new dean of social sciences at Northampton University, wants to give more back to the region.

Professor Moore, a former social worker who joins from Sheffield Hallam University, said: "I believe social science is about explaining how we live and grow together, and it is important that it makes a real contribution to the world of work and life and not just be an esoteric and academic area.

"Research is crucial, but higher education must link up with the real world.

"The subjects we study within social sciences offer a unique opportunity to connect with the business of running society. We can help identify how to make communities better places for people to live in."
