Miltos Makris , formerly at Bristol University, has been appointed reader in economics at Leicester University.

London Metropolitan University has appointed Michael Upton , former head of marketing and communications at South East Essex College, as academic leader responsible for recruitment and marketing in the Sir John Cass department of art, media and design.

Alison Oram , former reader in gender studies at Northampton University, has been appointed to the chair in social and cultural history at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Michael Arthur , vice-chancellor of Leeds University, will succeed Diana Green as chair of Yorkshire Universities, following her retirement.

Paul Burton , head of the school for policy studies at Bristol University, will be joining the Urban Research Programme at Griffith University, Australia, as professor of urban management and planning from August.

Buckingham University has appointed Nigel Foster as deputy vice-chancellor. He is a former reader in law and Jean Monnet professor of European law at Cardiff Law School.

Alex Halliday , chair of geochemistry and a fellow of St Hughes College, Oxford, has been appointed head of the mathematical, physical and life sciences division.

Manchester University has appointed M. J. Hyland , novelist and 2007 Hawthornden Prize winner, to its staff of novelists and poets in the centre for new writing.
