* Peter Burkill , formerly at Southampton University, has become professor of ocean science at Plymouth University and director of the Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science and the Continuous Plankton Recorder Survey.

* Yong-Hua Song has been named executive vice-president of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou, China.
