* David Woolfson , professor of pharmaceutics at Queen's University Belfast, has been appointed chair of the British Pharmacopoeia Commission.

* Alastair Thompson , professor of surgical oncology at Dundee University, has been appointed chair of the Breast Cancer Campaign's Scientific Advisory Board.

* Ulster University theatre studies lecturer Tom Maguire has been elected vice-chair of the Standing Conference of University Drama Departments.

* Keele University has appointed Philip Stenning , former professor in criminology at Victoria University of Wellington NZ, to the chair in criminology.

* Nicholas Bannan , formerly director of the Music Teaching in Professional Practice Initiative at the Reading University, has accepted a post in the School of Music at the University of Western Australia in Perth.

* Baroness Bottomley has been elected the next chancellor of Hull University. She will be installed formally in April, after the retirement of Lord Armstrong.
