* Kingston University has appointed Mary Stuart , professor and pro vice-chancellor at Sussex University, as deputy vice-chancellor.

* Steven Myint , former editor-in-chief of the Journal of Infection, has been appointed head of Surrey University's Postgraduate Medical School from January 2006.

* Nottingham University has appointed Richard Hubbard , former reader in clinical epidemiology at the university, to the British Lung Foundation/GlaxoSmithKline chair in epidemiological respiratory research.

* Terry Rabbitts , formerly at the Medical Research Council's laboratory of molecular biology in Cambridge, has been appointed head of Leeds University's Institute of Molecular Medicine, Epidemiology and Cancer Research.

* Oxford University has appointed: George Gottlob , professor of computing science at Vienna University of Technology and former chairman of the Information systems department, professor of computing science; Alan Cocks , head of Leicester University's engineering department, professor of materials engineering; and Armando Iannucci , writer and presenter of radio and television comedy, News International visiting professor of broadcast media.

* Roy Green has been appointed dean of the Macquarie Graduate School of Management at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. He was previously dean of the faculty of commerce, and head of the department of management, at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
