* Maureen Peters , formerly with the European Diagnostics Products Corporation and responsible for posts in research labs in the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London, has been appointed manager of DiagnOx Laboratory, Oxford, part-funded by the DTI Biotechnology Exploitation Platform.

* The following have been appointed by the European Commission Socrates-Erasmus Council to assist UK universities in participating in European higher education: Richard Whewell , associate head of department, University of Strathclyde; Howard Davies , head of European development, London Metropolitan University; Wendy Davies , pro provost, European Affairs, University College London; Malcolm Cook , senior deputy vice-chancellor, Exeter University; Stephen Adam , European Credit Transfer System counsellor, principal lecturer, Westminster University; Anthony Vickers , ECTS counsellor, head of department of electronic systems engineering, Essex University; Tim Birtwistle , ECTS counsellor, professor of law, Leeds Metropolitan University; John Reilly , ECTS counsellor, director of academic administration and deputy registrar, Kent University; Anne Davies , academic registrar, Queen's University, Belfast.

* Bob Nichol , professor at Carnegie Mellon University, US, has been appointed to a Marie Curie Excellence chair at Portsmouth University.

* Edith Hillan , professor at Glasgow University, has been appointed vice-provost academic, Toronto University.
