Peter Briggs , chief executive of the British Association, has been appointed pro-rector of the University of Surrey, Roehampton .

The University of Wales, Cardiff , has appointed: Adrian Phillips , chair of the policy committee of the Council for the Protection of Rural England, to an honorary chair in the department of city and regional planning; Peter Glasner , professor at the University of the West of England, to an honorary chair in the School of Social Sciences; Christian Jensen , of Aalborg University in Denmark, to an honorary chair in the department of computer science; William Napier , astronomer at the Armagh Observatory, to an honorary chair in the Centre for Astrobiology; and Martyn Guest , director of the High Performance Computing Centre at the Daresbury Laboratory, to an honorary chair in the department of computer science.

The Office of Science and Technology , the Wellcome Trust and the French government have appointed Richard Walker , director of the light sources division at the Sincrotrone in Trieste, Italy, technical director for the Diamond synchrotron project at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire.
