Christopher Peel, chief scientist for the mechanical sciences sector of the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency in Farnborough and a leading researcher into air safety, has been appointed to a visiting professorship in materials at the University of Oxford.

Michael Farthing, professor of gastroenterology and director of the digestive diseases research centre at St Bartholomew's and Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry, has been appointed executive dean of the faculty of medicine at the University of Glasgow.

Susan Davies, lecturer in palaeography and director of postgraduate training in archives and records management at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, has been re-appointed commissioner of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts.

Steven Ley, professor and head of organic chemistry at the University of Cambridge, has been elected president of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Trevor Kerry, visiting professor at the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside, has been made senior vice-president designate of the College of Teachers.
