* Hussein al-Shahristani , visiting professor at Surrey University, has been appointed deputy speaker of the recently formed Iraqi Parliament.

* Karan Bilimoria , founder and chief executive of Cobra Beer, has been appointed chancellor of Thames Valley University. He has been a governor of the university since 2001.

* The London School of Economics has appointed Willem Buiter to a chair in European political economy. He is chief economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London, a member of the Bank of England's monetary policy committee and has taught at Cambridge, Yale, Bristol and Princeton universities. He was Cassel professor at LSE (1982-85).

* Paisley University has appointed Brian Clarke governor of the university's court. Mr Clarke is the managing director of Glasgow-based property developer Park Lane.

* Hazel Biggs , formerly at Kent Law School, has been appointed professor of medical law at Lancaster University.

* Dundee University has appointed Elizabeth Leo , former professor of education and head of the School of Education at De Montfort University, to a chair in education; Allan Gillespie , former professor of photonics at Abertay Dundee University, to the chair of photonics in the department of electronic engineering and physics; and awarded Nicholas Davey , former reader, a personal chair in the department of philosophy.
