APPOINMENTS 

Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London
Conrad Atkinson
has been appointed distinguished visiting professor to the institute, the first practising artist to be invited to take up this position by Britain’s leading institute of the history of art; professor of art at the University of California at Davis since 1992, he joins the Courtauld during his sabbatical from California this month and will work there throughout the year.

University of Dundee
The university's school of life sciences has appointed the following to personal chairs:

Julian Blow
, personal chair of chromosome maintenance, formerly at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (Clare Hall Laboratories);
Bill Hunter , structural biology, formerly at the Wellcome Trust Biocentre;
Mike Stark , yeast molecular biology, formerly at the University of Leicester.

Loughborough University
Geoff Hankinson
, manager of the compliance, hazard and risk management division of Advantica, has been appointed to a chair in pipeline technology, established by the university with Advantica Technologies Ltd and the Royal Academy of engineering.

Institute of Hearing Research
The Medical Research Council's Nottingham based institute has appointed David Moore as director, succeeding Mark Haggard. Professor Moore was formerly professor of auditory neuroscience at the University of Oxford's laboratory of physiology.

Department for Education and Skills
The minister of adult skills has confirmed the five year appointment of Michael Latham as the chairman of the Construction Industry Training Board.

Department of Health
Bob Elliott
, professor of economics at the University of Aberdeen, has been appointed by the chief scientists at the Department of Health to a part-time post as director of  the health economics research unit.

Federal Republic of Germany
Frank Shaw
, emeritus professor of German at the University of Bristol, has been awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit in recognition of his outstanding contribution to German-British relations, in particular his work with the Bristol Anglo-German Society and the Bristol Scheme Trust.

Royal Dublin Society/Irish Times
The Boyle Medal for 2001 has been presented to Derek Briggs , professor and palaeontologist at the University of Bristol.

Royal Society
Stephen Sparks
, professor in the department of earth sciences at the University of Bristol has been awarded a Wolfson Research Merit Award by the society.
