New convener for Universities Scotland 
Bill Stevely, principal of Robert Gordon University, has been elected convener of Universities Scotland in succession to Lord Sutherland, principal of Edinburgh University. He will be convener for two years from September.

High-security breach at exam board
Exam board the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance has been told to improve its security after an unauthorised person was able to gain entry to its high-security certificate storage facility. Exam watchdog the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority disclosed details of the breach.

Protect 'marine 'hotspots' now, AAAS warned
More than a third of marine species most in danger of extinction live in a handful of coral reef “hotspots” scattered around the world, a study presented to the American Association for the Advancement of Science showed today. Callum Roberts, from the University of York, said: “We know that unless we take action right away, marine species will start going extinct.”
