Stanford nets record $400m gift
Stanford University is to receive $400 million (£280 million) from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the largest donation ever made to a United States university. Most of the money will support Stanford's endowment for humanities, sciences, and undergraduate education.

Death threats to blacks investigated
A special investigator has been appointed to look into death threats made against black students at Penn State University. Up to 500 students staged a protest on campus demanding greater protection after a flood of threatening letters and emails.

Constitution change sparks protest
University of Zambia students boycotted classes on Wednesday in protest at President Frederick Chiluba's plan to change the constitution so that he can run for a third term.
