LLD: Edward Heath, Conservative member of parliament for Old Bexley and Sidcup, former prime minister (1970-74), winner of the Sydney to Hobart Ocean Race (1969) and captain of Britain's Admiral's Cup Team in 1971 and 1979, author of books on politics and music; Jacques Santer, president of the European Commission, prime minister of Luxembourg (1984-94).

Richmond, The American International University in London

DH: Eve Arnold, photographer, awarded Lifetime Achievement from the American Society of Magazine photographers.

DHL: John Daniel, vice chancellor of the Open University.

DMus: Stanley Glasser, emeritus professor of music at the University of London and academic governor of Richmond, editor of the Dictionary of Classical Music.

Lancaster University

The management school at the university has awarded an honorary doctorate to Colin Marshall, chairman of British Airways and president of the Confederation of British Industry. The award acknowledges his contributions to business and the collaboration between British Airways and the management school.

Coventry University

MA: Doris Butterworth, charity and community worker, former chair of the women's section of Coventry Community Relations Council, the Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs, the Young Women's Christian Association and the National Association of Voluntary Help Organisers, chair of an independent review panel dealing with complaints about the NHS and co-ordinator of the Family Courts Consortium; Steve Ogrizovic, goalkeeper for Coventry City FC.

University of Abertay, Dundee
