Anthony Challinor , of the University of Cambridge, has been awarded the Royal Astronomical Society 's Michael Penston prize for his PhD thesis on the cosmic microwave background.
The University of the West of England has awarded honorary doctorates of science to: Beryl Corner , for her contribution to paediatric medicine and to female emancipation in the medical profession; Pamela Enderby , for her contribution to speech and language therapy and to rehabilitation research; and Sir Leonard Peach , for his contribution to public service and to the improvement of management, education and training in the National Health Service and other related professions. It also awarded an honorary degree of doctor of education to Roger Dawe , who recently retired as director general of the further and higher education and youth training directorate at the Department for Education and Employment, for his contribution to education and training.
Ron Dennis , chairman and chief executive of the Tag McLaren group, has been awarded an honorary degree from the University of Surrey .
Michael Gibbons , secretary general of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, has been made a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences .
Kenneth Holmes , director of the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, Germany, has been awarded the European Science Foundation 's European Latsis prize for contributions to structural biology.
City University, London , has presented honorary doctorates to: Liu Ming-Kang , chairman of the Bank of China; Brian Lee , rector of St Botolph without Aldgate with Holy Trinity Minories; John Hilton , senior consultant with mi2g ltd; Robert O'Brien , chief executive and deputy chairman of London First; Robin Fox , chairman of Lombard Risk Consultants; and Christopher Reeves , senior adviser for Merrill Lynch International.
Peter Williams , of the University of Wales, Bangor's School of Biological Sciences, has been elected a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology for his contribution to applied and environmental research into microbiology.
