Research by academics at Edge Hill University suggests that an intensive-learning scheme to teach mathematics to children who are finding it difficult to grasp works. The Numbers Count scheme was developed by Edge Hill in partnership with Lancashire County Council to help train more than 200 teachers to support six-year-old children who are finding maths hard to pick up. The youngsters trialling the programme have made an average of 12 months' progress in the subject in just three months as a result of 20 hours of tuition, the university said.
