Vincent O'Brien, racehorse trainer, for his contribution to national hunt and flat racing. Victoria Glendenning, novelist and biographer. Michael Murphy, educationist for his contribution to the university and academic affairs in Northern Ireland. Lucille Mair, Jamaican ambassador to United Nations and chair of United Nations University Council. Jos Lapsley, for services to the University of Ulster.

Bournemouth University D.Eng: Tom Monkcom, chairman and managing director of De Vilbiss and chairman of the board of governors of Dorset Institute (now Bournemouth University); Michael Cobham, chairman of FR Group plc.

D.Litt: Eric Newby, travel writer.

D.Sc: Maldwin Drummond, chairman of Heritage Coast Forum and New Forest Committee.

Honorary professor: Albert Roux, founder and owner of Le Gavroche restaurant.
