University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology

J. Vickerman, former Royal Society European research fellow at the Technische Hogeschool and reader at UMIST, has been appointed to a personal chair in chemistry.

King's College, London

Michael Knibb, professor of Old Testament studies, appointed to the Samuel Davidson chair of Old Testament studies; Russell Winder, formerly at University College, London, appointed professor of computer science.

The following readers have been promoted: Anthony David, professor of cognitive neuropsychiatry and Simon Wessely, professor of liaison psychiatry.

University of Aberdeen

Clare Roberts, former reader at the University of Exeter, has been appointed to a chair in accountancy; Graeme Simpson, business opportunities group manager with Esso Exploration and Production UK Ltd, has been appointed to the Schlumberger chair of energy industry management.

University of Reading

The following readers have been promoted: D. Berry, professor of psychology; P. Hadley, professor of horticultural crop physiology; T. Herrington, professor of colloid science; P. Noble, professor of Medieval and Quebec literature; A. Wright, professor of amorphous solid state physics; R. Jones, senior lecturer, professor of international relations.
