UNIVERSITY OF LONDON. Eric Fernie has been appointed director of the Courtauld Institute of Art, from October 1995, succeeding Michael Kauffmann on his retirement.

UNIVERSITY OF SUNDERLAND

Andrew McDonald, chair of the college and research section at UK Library Association's University College and Research section has been appointed director of information services.

LEEDS METROPOLITANUNIVERSITY

David Band, director of the advanced business programme at the University of Otago, New Zealand, has been appointed dean of the faculty of business.

BRITISH PSYCHOLOGICALSOCIETY

Stephen Newstead, professor of psychology at the University of Plymouth, has been appointed president of the society, 1995-96.

UNIVERSITY OF SWANSEA

Lord (Ivor) Richard, leader of the opposition in the House of Lords, ex- Labour MP and Euro commissioner, has been elected president.

UMIST

Roland Smith, emeritus professor of marketing, director of the Bank of England and chairman of Hepworth plc, has been elected chancellor from January 1996.
