University of Central England

Sybil Spence, lord mayor of Birmingham, former chief whip of the city's Labour group, has been appointed chancellor; Judith Elkin, professor and member of the Library Association Council, is to be dean of the faculty of computing and information studies; Sue Ward, head of the marketing unit at Nottingham Trent University, has been appointed director of the marketing unit.

Association of Accounting Technicians

Noel Sladen, senior assistant finance officer at the University of Sussex, has been elected president.

University of Edinburgh

Nicholas Terry, senior lecturer in finance at the University of Edinburgh, has been appointed chief executive of the Advanced Management Programme in Scotland on secondment for two years; Stephen Hillier, professor of reproductive endocrinology and convener of the faculty of medicine postgraduate studies committee, has been appointed director of the new graduate school of life sciences.

University of Bradford

Betty Lockwood, first chair of the Equal Opportunities Commission and deputy speaker of the House of Lords, has been appointed chancellor.
