The Quality Assurance Agency

John Randall, former director of professional standards and development at the Law Society, has been appointed chief executive.

The following have been appointed to five independent directorships: Judith Evans, director of personnel policy at J. Sainsbury plc; Geoffrey Robinson, director of technology, IBM UK; Margaret Seward, president, General Dental Council; Hugh Smith, chairman, Association of Graduate Recruiters and manager of graduate entry and external accreditation, British Telecom; Richard Sykes, chief executive, Glaxo Wellcome.

University of Surrey

After a revision of the management structure, the following professors have been appointed heads of schools: Michael Kelly, school of electronic engineering, information technology and mathematics; Hans Muller-Steinhagen, school of chemical, civil and environmental engineering; Mike Goringe, school of mechanical and materials engineering; Jim Lynch, school of biological sciences; Jim Bridges, European institute of health and medical sciences; William Gelletly, school of physical sciences; Glynis Breakwell, school of human sciences; Chris Flockton, school of language and international studies; Michael Kipps, school of management studies for the service sector; Janet Lansdale, school of performing arts; Leni Oglesby, school of educational studies.

University of Cambridge

David Harrison, master of Selwyn College, has been named the second pro vice chancellor. Roger Needham, former head of the computer laboratory will continue his role as pro-vice chancellor.

University College of St Martin

Jacquelin Filkins, director of nursing and quality at the Carlisle Hospital NHS Trust, has been appointed dean of the health faculty.
