Austria can be a great place to acquire a university education. Along with a high quality of life, the country offers a wide variety of programmes starting from undergraduate level up to postgraduate. At my school, we usually encourage students to consider Austria’s research universities, applied science universities, private institutions and teacher education colleges.

Although there is no single application system for Austrian universities, the Study in Austria website contains all the relevant information regarding higher education in Austria.

To find specific programmes, visit the Studienwahl website. Here, students can search for English-language programmes, or apply any other filters, such as tuition rate or type of institution.

Studying in Austria: the different types of universities

The undergraduate admission process for Austria may differ depending on the language of instruction and the type of institution.

International students often prioritise research universities over universities of applied science, because the former tend to perform better in university rankings. However, rankings should not be the only criterion when choosing where to study.

Public research universities

Admission to German-language programmes at Austrian public universities often requires a C1 or B2 level in German. To apply, students must first provide a certificate indicating that they have reached the required level of proficiency.

If students do not meet this requirement, there are multiple language courses available that can be undertaken before their undergraduate studies. Universität Vienna sprachenzentrum and die Beater are Vienna-based language courses that can provide the requisite certificate on completion.

Unlike universities in most other countries, Austrian public universities do not require a 12-year, high school diploma. This means that students coming from countries with an 11-year secondary education, such as Kazakhstan, can apply without taking a foundation year.

Undergraduate programmes with German-language instruction at public universities cost approximately €750 per semester for international students. Accommodation and food costs are not included. You can check university websites or numbeo.com for information on living expenses in Austria. On average, monthly living expenses for students are about €1,400. However, this may differ across different cities.

There are English-language programmes at Austrian public universities, too. Admission to those programmes is highly competitive because there is high demand from international students. It often (but not always) requires an in-person entrance exam, which is taken in the summer.

Universities of applied science

Universities of applied science can be a great option for students who are looking for a career-oriented education with an emphasis on skills and practical training. Practical training elements or internships are usually a compulsory part of the curriculum.

There are about 80 programmes available in English. Tuition fees per semester are about €365 in universities for applied science.

Application documents include a passport, an equivalent secondary school certificate and evidence of language proficiency. High school transcripts must be provided in the original language and with notarised translations. Since each university has its own requirements, it is recommended to visit official university websites for more specific information.

Private universities

Private universities in Austria do not require knowledge of German for admission. For example, Webster University is an American university, and its admission requirements resemble those of other US universities: high school transcripts, motivation letter, recommendation letters and SAT scores.

Tuition fees at these universities are higher than those at public universities. Students can find specific fees on individual university websites.

Funding and visas

There are limited scholarships available for international students, depending on their country of origin. They can be checked here.

It is important to apply for a visa at least three months before coming to Austria.
