About Department of Architecture: PolyU is going to establish the Department of Architecture under the Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE) with effect from 1 July 2026. FCE is globally renowned for its excellence in Architecture & Built Environment and Civil & Structural Engineering, both ranked 17th worldwide by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS Subject Ranking) in 2025. As a new dynamic hub for architectural innovation, the Department aims to consolidate FCE’s academic strengths, drive innovative education and research, attract global talent, and elevate both the Faculty’s and PolyU’s international standing in architecture and advanced technologies.  The Department is looking for enthusiastic and established outstanding scholars to join the team and help build a strong academic community to achieve transformative impact in AI-enhanced and big data driven architectural education and research. Our priority research areas include: Architecture Technology and Engineering Urban Planning and Design Landscape Architecture Heritage Conservation / Architectural Heritage To boost the leadership and impact of PolyU’s research work in areas of significant societal needs and strategic importance, the Strategic Hiring Scheme is introduced to recruit faculty members at all levels and outstanding scholars will have the chance to join the University under the Strategic Hiring Scheme. Appointees recruited under the Strategic Hiring Scheme should have conducted / led world-leading research that is commensurate with the stage of their academic career. Appointees under the Strategic Hiring Scheme will be offered a start-up grant of not less than HK$3 million to support research activities (including the admission of PhD students, purchasing of equipment, and hiring of research staff) in the initial three years. Duties  The appointees will be required to: (a)    undertake teaching duties at various levels in the above architecture related areas; (b)    engage in programme and curriculum planning, development, validation, accreditation and administration of architecture-related programmes; (c)    supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and theses; (d)    initiate and lead scholarly research projects in their areas of expertise, actively pursue quality journal publications, and seek external research grants to enhance the Department’s research strengths; (e)    undertake relevant administrative duties; and (f)     perform any other duties as assigned by the Dean and the Head of Unit or his/her delegates. Qualifications Applicants should: (a)    have a bachelor degree in Architectural Studies and a master’s degree in Architecture or equivalent, leading to an architect professional qualification; (b)    have a PhD degree in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Urban Planning, Landscape Design or a related discipline;  (c)    have knowledge of advanced technology related to Architecture and Design, including proficiency in BIM, Revit and other relevant tools; (d)    have substantial years of relevant post-qualification experience, in particular programme development and management; (e)    have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research; (f)     have an excellent proven record in research and scholarship achievement; and (g)    be able to demonstrate effective classroom teaching skills and have good interpersonal skills. Applicants for appointment at Chair Professor level should have an outstanding record of global leadership and research achievement in the community, in addition to substantial years of relevant post-qualification experience. Department of Building and Real Estate Professor in Architectural Engineering / Building Engineering (Ref. 251117016) The Department of Building and Real Estate is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Construction and Environment. The Department offers a full range of programmes leading to the awards of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy, Master of Science and Bachelor of Science. It has an undergraduate student body of over 600 full-time students and a postgraduate student body of over 300. The Department currently has a total of 30 full-time academic / teaching staff, 20 technical and administrative staff and over 100 research personnel. Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development The Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development (RISUD) was established in 2012 by Professor Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU. It is one of the constituent research units under the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR). RISUD plays a pivotal role in promoting sustainable urban development by advancing the conservation of natural ecosystems and fostering energy- and resource-efficient living environments. Its key areas of focus include water management, outdoor air quality, and urban infrastructure. By leveraging PolyU’s interdisciplinary research strengths and utilising Hong Kong as a “living laboratory”, RISUD seeks to develop innovative solutions tailored to the unique challenges of high-density urban environments. The institute’s mission is to address the complexities of urbanisation through cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, facilitate knowledge transfer through strategic partnerships with industry and government, and foster a culture of urban sustainability through active community engagement and public service. The University is now inviting applications and nominations for the post of Dean of School of Design. The successful candidate will be appointed Chair Professor/Professor, commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience, and will hold a concurrent deanship appointment. The concurrent deanship appointment is normally for an aggregate period of six years in two three-year terms of office, and may be further extended subject to excellent performance.  Job Functions The position calls for a visionary and dynamic academic leader with responsibilities of ensuring the smooth and successful operation and sustainable development of the School.  Reporting directly to the Deputy President and Provost, the appointee will be required to: (a) provide effective leadership in the formulation of an inspiring vision for the School and its long-term development with strategies and plans for its implementation; (b) ensure high-quality teaching as well as holistic development of the students, and align the School’s programmes with the needs of society;  (c)  facilitate the conduct of pioneering and highly original research that addresses key societal challenges by leveraging cross-disciplinary research expertise and optimal use of research funds;  (d) lead the transformation of design education to ensure that graduates are ready for the era of AI; (e) provide leadership in knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship initiatives to extend the impact of research outcomes of the University to the community; (f) provide leadership in developing a strong network of partnerships with leading institutions for collaboration in education, research and knowledge transfer activities;   (g) enhance the local and international networks of partnerships and linkages with the community, particularly the professional, public and business sectors, so as to gain their support for the major strategic initiatives of the University;  (h) ensure effective internal communication that leads to transparent and fair decision-making process and promote the School’s strengths and other services to all relevant stakeholders; (i) provide support to staff members to maximize their potential and for the accomplishment of strategic objectives of the University and the School; (j) ensure optimal deployment of human, financial and other resources in the School; (k) implement an effective mechanism to acquire donations and other forms of sponsorship to support the School’s pursuits and long-term development; and (l) undertake other duties as assigned by the Deputy President and Provost or the Central Management Team of the University as required. Qualifications  Applicants should have: (a) a PhD degree or equivalent academic and/or professional qualifications in Design or a relevant field; (b) a distinguished record of academic achievements supplemented by professional experience; (c) a distinguished and international reputation in research and scholarship; (d) an excellent track record of attracting funding for research projects; (e) strong leadership and strategic management skills with demonstrated success in leading and managing academic or other complex organisations; (f) demonstrated knowledge and experience required to implement the educational goals of a world-class School of Design;   (g) knowledge of current trends in design education, research and practice; (h) a strong international network of partnerships and linkages within the academic, design, business and industrial communities; (i) a global perspective and demonstrated ability to work with faculty members of various disciplines with different cultural backgrounds. (j) effective interpersonal communication and resource management skills, and excellent adaptability to changes and challenges;  (k) excellent knowledge of the higher education environment in the local and/or global context; and (l) a high standard of personal integrity.
