Department of Architecture PolyU is going to establish the Department of Architecture (ARCH) under the Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE) with effect from 1 July 2026.  FCE is globally renowned for its excellence in Architecture & Built Environment and Civil & Structural Engineering, both ranked 17th worldwide by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS Subject Ranking) in 2025. As a new dynamic hub for architectural innovation, ARCH aims to consolidate FCE’s academic strengths, drive innovative education and research, attract global talent, and elevate both the Faculty’s and PolyU’s international standing in architecture and advanced technologies. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the Department’s vision, building a strong academic team to achieve transformative impact in AI-enhanced and big data driven architectural education and research. The University is now inviting applications and nominations for the post of Head of Department of Architecture. The successful candidate will be appointed Chair Professor/Professor normally on regular terms of appointment (equivalent to tenured professorship), commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience, and will hold a concurrent headship appointment. The concurrent headship appointment is normally for an aggregate period of six years in two three-year terms of office. Other suitable candidate(s) from the search, if deemed appropriate by the University, may be appointed Chair Professor/Professor if not Head of Department.  HKSAR is an international city located strategically at the heart of Asia and is the gateway to Chinese Mainland, with excellent transport links to major international cities.  Job Functions The position calls for a visionary academic leader with responsibilities of ensuring the smooth and successful operation and sustainable development of the Department. Reporting directly to the Dean of Faculty of Construction and Environment, the appointee will be required to: (a)    provide effective leadership in the development of long-term strategies and plans of the Department, in alignment with the University’s Strategic Plan, particularly focusing on AI-based and data-driven approaches to enhance architectural practices; and coach and empower subordinates so that they can accomplish planned objectives with world-class standards and in an effective and efficient manner; (b)    ensure high-quality teaching as well as holistic development of the students, integrating AI/engineering technology into the Department’s academic programmes to meet community needs and industry standards;  (c)    facilitate the conduct of innovative and original research of high quality and impact, and promote and develop genuine interdisciplinary research with the optimal use of research funds;  (d)    provide leadership in technology development, commercialisation and entrepreneurship initiatives to extend the impact of research outcomes of the University to the community; (e)    provide leadership in developing a strong network of partnership with leading tertiary institutions for opportunities and collaboration in education, research and knowledge transfer activities;   (f)     enhance the local and international partnerships with the community, particularly the professional, public and business sectors, so as to gain their support for the major strategic initiatives of the University;  (g)    ensure effective internal communication that leads to a transparent decision-making process and promote the Department’s strengths and other services to all relevant stakeholders; (h)    ensure optimal deployment of human, financial and other resources in the Department; (i)     implement an effective mechanism to acquire donations and other forms of sponsorship to support the University’s pursuits and long-term development; and (j)     undertake other duties as assigned by the Dean of Faculty or the Central Management Team of the University as required. Qualifications  Applicants should have: (a)    academic qualifications at the doctoral level in a relevant academic discipline, evidence of eminent scholarship and substantial relevant experience in a senior academic position, with relevant professional qualification and registration where appropriate;   (b)    attainment of an academic rank of full professor or above at an internationally recognised university; (c)    a distinguished global reputation in research and scholarship, and demonstrated international leadership in Architecture / Architectural Engineering and/or closely related disciplines; (d)    a strong record in attracting competitive research funding and collaborating with industry; (e)    a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching; (f)     a global perspective, proven qualities of academic leadership and substantial administration / management experience, as well as the demonstrated ability of building up a strong team of faculty members with different research and cultural backgrounds;  (g)    effective interpersonal communication and resource management skills, and excellent adaptability to changes and challenges;  (h)    good knowledge of the higher educational environment in the local and global context; and (i)     a high standard of personal integrity. Department of Building and Real Estate Teaching Fellow in Construction and Real Estate Technology (Ref. 251118015) The Department of Building and Real Estate is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Construction and Environment. The Department offers a full range of programmes leading to the awards of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy, Master of Science and Bachelor of Science. It has an undergraduate student body of over 600 full-time students and a postgraduate student body of over 300. The Department currently has a total of 30 full-time academic / teaching staff, 20 technical and administrative staff and over 100 research personnel. Duties The appointee will be required to: (a) conduct lectures, tutorials and supervise students at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels at the scheduled time.  Some evening teaching is expected; (b) prepare teaching materials including hand-outs, presentations, coursework assignments, examination papers, etc.;  (c) meet with students during office or assigned hours on academic matters, career issues and other appropriate matters; (d) assess students’ study progress by periodic evaluations through coursework assignments, tests and examinations according to established grading scheme / policy; (e) propose / plan new programmes, design / review subject / programme curriculum, and design / facilitate learning activities; (f) contribute to subject / programme validation and coordinate programme quality assurance processes; (g) help promote teaching quality by leading / organising teaching development projects, and/or chairing / serving on teaching-related committees / panels, and by means of workshops / forums and by coaching / mentoring other junior teaching staff to become better teachers; (h) engage actively in scholarly activities; (i) perform administrative duties as and when called upon by the Head of Unit; (j) render professional service to the community and support activities that promote or foster links with the profession in the industry and/or in the community, e.g. serving on committees of external bodies of the profession, etc.; and (k) perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Unit or his/her delegates. Qualifications Applicants should have:  (a) a relevant master’s degree in Construction or a closely related field, plus not less than five years of post-qualification tertiary teaching experience and/or relevant professional, practical or industrial experience; preferably with relevant professional qualification;  (b) documented professional achievements in teaching and demonstrated high level of competence in design and delivery of teaching, curriculum and pedagogy development, subject administration and programme management;  (c) some experience in academic management and leadership;  (d) a good command of both written and spoken English and Chinese; and (e) good teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills. The Design discipline at the School takes a sustainable and humanistic approach which also aims to expand the scope of traditional design into the sociotechnical realms. The three conceptual pillars constitute: (a) Social Design - collaborative design with communities and the public sectors to improve living conditions through critical, systemic and participatory approaches; (b) Design Economies - entrepreneurial design that enhances service innovation and value creation in the private sector; and (c) Design Making - human-centered and hands-on design investigations in labs and with communities, in the practices of making and prototyping via socio-technical means. They are identified as the three flagship themes to consolidate the research focus and emerging pedagogies in the School. Duties The appointees will be required to: (a)    conduct research as the main duty and actively pursue external research grants, such as General Research Fund, as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator;  (b)    conduct research that leads to publications in refereed journals, or a body of design work which leads to outputs contributing to the knowledge and teaching of the design disciplines;  (c)    provide quality teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level;  (d)    contribute to departmental service; and (e)    perform any other duties as assigned by the Dean of School or his delegates. Qualifications  Applicants should:  (a)    have a PhD degree in a related discipline;  (b)    preferably have at least two years of postdoctoral research experience; (c)    have demonstrated promise of a high level of creative ability in research and teaching in some subdivisions of his/her field; (d)    be able to demonstrate effective classroom teaching skills; and (e)    be highly proficient in written and spoken English. Preference will be given to those with experience in writing research proposals.
