The work will revolve around the ASKAP Polarisation Survey of the Universe’s Magnetism, POSSUM. This position will focus on using POSSUM Rotation Measures to probe the magnetoionic medium in the Magellanic Clouds, the circumgalactic medium of galaxies and/or nearby galaxy groups. This will also include some technical work to enable the delivery of the POSSUM survey data products. The Postdoctoral Fellow is also expected to contribute to other areas of academic activity including education and service (including outreach). The Postdoctoral Fellow may also be required to supervise or mentor less senior staff, and undertake leadership roles as applicable. The staff member will contribute cooperatively to the overall intellectual life of the School, College and University.    The Person An outstanding Postdoctoral Fellow in the areas of Faraday rotation and/or extragalactic magnetism. The candidate will have (or shortly obtain) a PhD in astronomy or a related area, with a strong track record of research in the field of Radio Polarimetry and/or Faraday Rotation as evidenced by cited publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, a record of developing and maintaining collaborations and by other measures such as awards, and invitations to present at prominent conferences etc. The candidate will have a track record of articulating and prosecuting innovative research in the field of astronomy and demonstrated ability to lead and work as part of a team. The Postdoctoral Fellow will use ASKAP POSSUM data with a view to publishing original and innovative results in international refereed journals, present research at academic seminars and at national and international conferences, and collaborate with other researchers at a national and/or international level.   The School The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics is a leading centre of Astronomy and Astronomical Instrumentation research in Australia. As HDRH Project Administrator, you will: Coordinate and manage HDRH projects, create project plans and associated documents, undertake project tracking, reporting and mapping and implementation of new processes where required. Coordinate the financial administration of the HDRH’s projects, ensure contract milestones are met, allocate resources, track and balance the budget, take accountability for obtaining the needed approvals and for accurate processing and reporting. Coordinate the human resources administration, including the preparation of various paperwork for approvals, basic HR system processing, running reports and investigating issues, coordinating staff recruitment and appointments, including immigration and relocation support and local area induction, as needed, ensuring compliance with University policies and procedures and local area protocols. The funding that supports this project has an expected end date of December 2030. The Position The Software Engineering Specialist will design, develop and maintain software systems for astronomical data acquisition, instrument control, and telemetry. They will work within project teams across the AITC, using their programming and problem-solving skills to deliver high-quality, robust, and well-documented code. They will have an initial focus on projects related to next-generation optical telescopes such as the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). The Person To excel in this role, you will have: Progress towards postgraduate qualifications in software engineering, computer science, astronomy & astrophysics, or related disciplines, OR a relevant undergraduate degree with a minimum of four years’ relevant experience in scientific and/or aerospace software development; Experience with at least one of Python, C, or C++, and with embedded systems and Unix environments; A track record of applying best-practice software development methodologies, including version control, robust testing, and detailed documentation; The ability to work across multi-disciplinary teams, and to manage workloads across multiple projects with minimal supervision; and, Experience in astronomical instrumentation, astronomical software, and/or spaceflight hardware/software would be favourably regarded. The Area The Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC) is national facility in Canberra and part of the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA). The Centre was established to support the development of the next generation of instruments for astronomy and space science. Our staff have built specialised astronomical instruments for some of the world’s largest optical telescopes; we are currently designing and building instruments to be mounted on the next generation of extremely large telescopes.
