David King, the government’s chief scientific adviser, has launched a review of energy research and development. An open meeting will be held on Monday October 29 at the Engineering Employers Federation.

Students from poor families are seeing their studies suffer as they are forced to work during term time, research confirmed today. The pressure created a “circle of decline” affecting both them and the universities they attended, said Hilary Metcalf, of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.
