Oslo
Norwegian minister of education and research Trond Giske has tabled a bill to set up 14 universities and university colleges, bringing the total to 18. Applications for university status are expected from other colleges.

Ramallah
Israeli troops opened fire on Palestinians who were attempting to use a bulldozer to break though barriers blocking the road between Ramallah and the university campus of Bir Zeit. One man was killed and many others were injured.

Kiev
Ukrainian student activists are to continue protests against president Leonid Kuchma, with strikes planned in Kiev and Lviv, despite their failure last Friday to prevent him from laying flowers at the statue of Ukraine's national poet Taras Shevchenko. About 200 people, including opposition MPs, were arrested.

Ottawa
The Canadian government has allocated C$750 million (£330 million) to the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, which contributes 40 per cent funding to partnership projects for university equipment and facilities.

Buenos Aires
Argentine police investigating the murder of a 35-year-old student of English translation at the Universidad de Lomas de Zamora, suspect either a crime passionnel or a murder organised by a religious sect. Walda Sanden was last seen leaving her home for university.

Lagos
A man died of gunshot wounds during two days of clashes between students, most of them from the University of Lagos, and joint police-army units in Lagos, Nigerian police said.

Piacenza
An Italian professor of viticulture at the Universita Cattolica di Piacenza claims to have proved that spumante wine was first invented by the ancient Romans and not by the French monk Dom Pérignon.

Jakarta
At least 10,000 students took part in demonstrations outside the presidential palace in Jakarta to demand the resignation of Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid. He rejected the calls.
