Israeli troops opened fire on Palestinians who were attempting to use a bulldozer to break though barriers blocking the road between Ramallah and the university campus of Bir Zeit. One man was killed and many others were injured.

Ukrainian student activists are to continue protests against president Leonid Kuchma, with strikes planned in Kiev and Lviv, despite their failure last Friday to prevent him from laying flowers at the statue of Ukraine's national poet Taras Shevchenko. About 200 people, including opposition MPs, were arrested.

At least 10,000 students took part in demonstrations outside the presidential palace in Jakarta to demand the resignation of Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid. He rejected the calls.
