Five universities have earned awards that recognise initiatives to improve career options and support for women in science, engineering and technology. The Athena Swan Awards were handed out this week to Keele University, York University and Queen's University Belfast, and to the department of biology and chemistry at York.

York was praised for its nursery provision and childcare voucher scheme as well as for its plans to introduce flexible working.
