Jane Rapley, who helped launch some of the biggest names in fashion, will become the new head of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design from August 1.

Ms Rapley, as dean of fashion and textiles, led the team of academics who taught internationally acclaimed designers such as Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Matthew Williamson.

Ms Rapley has been at the college for 19 years and has been acting head since last January. She is keen to get to grips with the key challenges facing the college. These include building its national and international reputations.

IN

Hamish Clifton becomes the university's commercial director and managing director for subsidiary company London Artscom. He was formerly chief executive officer of Lindley Catering and a former commercial director of Wembly Stadium.

Anne Nicholls joins London College of Communication as head of marketing and communications. She comes from the Learning and Skills Council, where she was communications manager.

Rob Buckler joins the College of Communication as director, Skillset Screen Academy. He is a successful film producer and screenwriter, and his main task will be to improve the interface between the world of film, television and academia.

OUT

Margaret Buck , head of Saint Martins since 1989, leaves to pursue her own professional practice and consultancy.

Peter Ford , head of resources and administration, is leaving after seven years to take up a post at Kingston University.

Sue Asser , registrar, retires from the University of the Arts after 40 years' dedicated service in a number of roles across the university.
