UCLAN

Tim Thornton, an academic who applies philosophy and philosophical concepts to treating people with mental illness, has joined the University of Central Lancashire. He said mental illness threw up not only fascinating philosophical problems, such as the concept of self, but that philosophy could also help clinicians treat patients. "Clinicians recognise that aspects of psychology call for a conceptual as well as an empirical approach to research," he said.

John Wilson becomes professor of international business and director of the Institute for International Business.

Bogusia Temple joins UCLan as professor of health and social care research from Salford University.

Paola Dey becomes professor of public health.

Alison Cowdall takes up the post of director of human resources.

Norman Burrow , pro vice-chancellor, becomes principal of the Fire Safety Engineering College in Oman.

Daniel Lamont retires as dean of the faculty of cultural, legal and social studies.

John McCarthy , deputy director of advancement and head of marketing, moves to Liverpool Hope University.

Nigel Simons moves to Edge Hill University College.
