The latest academic to graduate from the Robert Winston school of media profile-raising is the University of Surrey's Neil Stanley. Fresh as a daisy from appearing as the sleep expert on Channel 4's Shattered last week and despite warning that "if you deprive people of sleep they will actually die quicker than if you deprive them of food", he took the production company's shilling and stated the obvious: that the contestants were rather tired, rendering them incapable of functioning normally. Fortunately media pundit Cary Cooper was available to condemn the show. "It's putting people through suffering just for the titillation of viewers to boost ratings," he told the Daily Express newspaper.
